USU Builds Pico-hydro Power Plant in Dusun Bantoon, Humbang Hasundutan
The Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Community Service Team took a concrete step by building a pico-hydro power plant in Dusun Bantoon, Desa Sionom Hudon VII, Kabupaten Humbang Hasundutan (Humbahas). Led by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, ST, MT, the team aims to overcome the problem of electricity shortage in the region by utilizing the potential energy of water.
The team, consisting of Emerson Pascawira Sinulingga, ST, MSc, PhD, Hendrik V Sihombing, ST, MT, and several students, chose Dusun Bantoon because of its water spring potential and hilly topography. They are working with local residents to build a pico-hydro power plant that will provide light for nine households in the hamlet.
Although access to Dusun Bantoon is quite challenging, with a three-hour journey through a hiking trail, the USU community service team remains eager to realize this project. Hopefully, this effort will not only offer a solution to the electricity problem in the area, but also encourage awareness of nature conservation and safeguard water resources used as alternative energy.
